Dear Saints of Our Lord Jesus
here at Sankt Petrus,

“O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie,” we will sing, quietly, gently, remembering other Christmas and other blessed places, landscapes and buildings covered with snow. Peaceful.

Peaceful is not a word I would use about Bethlehem. It swam in the tension between occupying Roman conquerors and the “oppressed” native population. The Jewish population torn itself apart, too: Zealots fighting guerilla or terrorist war against the Romans, Sadducees hand-in-glove with the Romans, Pharisees condemning the whole mess … and the other population just trying to “get by.”

Peaceful? Not a word to use about “backwater” Bethlehem, and that only makes sense: the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6) doesn’t come to a place OF peace, but to a people NEEDING peace.

Does that mess in Israel sound a lot like the turmoil of our national political scene? Does the internal friction of the Jews sound like the messy situation of our American church life today? Hummmmm.

Christmas for that Holy Family? Taxed by Roman occupiers, lacking proper housing for weeks or months. A pregnant, engaged couple lacking proper marriage, relieved to be away from Nazareth and vicious gossip and scandal … and still wishing … missing family who loves to be around them, comforts of home and of kitchen, “my” bed and “my” pleasant foods and “my” regular routines, jammed in too little space for a man, a woman, and a just-born baby, no running water, no disposable diapers … and with disreputable, smelly, early-teen shepherds … and then some bizarre, foreign (?heathen?) religious fanatics (Magi). What’s a good Jewish girl (Mary) or boy (Joseph) doing in a place like this, amid tension and turmoil

Christmas for us? What about our distances and tensions and turmoil's in our own families and in our family of faith at Sankt Petrus? 

What about our confusions and conflicts? How do we deal with sin and brokenness and evil done to us and by us?

We can ignore all that; maybe it will go away? Maybe pretend there are no problems? Maybe ignore it because “I can’t do anything about it” or because NObody can do anything about it?

God has done something about brokenness, done exactly what needs doing: at the Bethlehem stable we find in the manger our salvation and we welcome the Christ of the Crucifixion & the Resurrection.

To us – in our context of turmoil and distress and uncertainty – this no-mere-baby, this King of kings and Lord of lords, comes out of the Father’s love and through the Holy Spirit’s power, comes and speaks “peace” not because we have it, but because we NEED it. He comes and changes our lives as thoroughly as he changed those of his parents, calling us out of our habits and our finely-aged angers and anxieties, calling us into HIS new life. Living in him, we no longer continue in our tensions and fighting and “stuckness.”

So as we deal with brokenness, we don’t ignore it, nor do we just do
ANY old thing, for that is also meaningless and despairing. In that manger, on the Cross, out of the empty tomb comes our hope and our joy, so we live in faith, loving as we have been loved, giving as we have received, forgiving as we have been forgiven, rejoicing as we receive joy.

We celebrate Christmas as more than a day; it is a SEASON ( “Twelve Days”), a season to celebrate not OUR goodness but God's
 goodness as we receive our Easter Lord and live our Easter faith.

God bless your Christmas preparation and celebration as God gives us God’s glory, and as we respond, giving “to God alone the glory” [Soli Deo Gloria]. Amen.

As we come to the end of this year, I want to share the following information with you.

First: It is very important that all of us bring our weekly or monthly gifts of money to the church, or send it through the mail. During the closing weeks of this year we should catch up on our commitment which perhaps we have let slide.

Second: We want to bring our 2011 operating budget into the black by inviting you to make use of the enclosed special Christmas envelope for an additional contribution. As in earlier years, our congregation will, no doubt, be generous in its response.

GIVING TREE
This year our “Giving Tree”
will help the residents for:

“Turning Point”
A shelter for abused women and children. This shelter gives them temporary housing and counseling and then sets them up in their own apartment. Most of these women and children leave their current situation with nothing but what they can carry and the money in their wallets and must leave everything else behind.

In the Narthex a “giving tree” will be up with a list of items needed underneath it. Please be so kind and take a list and provide an item off the list, bring it to the church and drop it off in the brown box next to the tree. Please do not wrap the item.

Tithing: A Leap of Faith
             Tithing Challenge

Faith empowers us to give generously. What we do with our money is a reflection of the condition of our hearts. Our willingness to give is an indicator of where the priorities in our lives are. Tithing (giving ten percent) is a statement of faith. Because our hearts are filled with the love of Christ, his love is visible in what we do and give. As Christians today, we are motivated for stewardship by the gift of God's grace through his son. Our giving can have no greater foundation than the Gospel of forgiveness.

I
n the coming weeks, we will be challenging you as members of our church, to prayerfully consider tithing growing in the grace of giving by increasing the proportionate amount you give. Giving is an important part of our worship and praise of Christ. The Apostle Paul said,

“On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income…” (1 Corinthians 16:2).

Our giving gives our Lord honor and gratitude for who he is and what he has done.

Tithing is given to us as a guide for proportionate giving. As New Testament Christians, tithing is an expectation rather than a command. For some of us, tithing is already a reality and, by God's grace, you may be called to achieve an ever higher level of giving. For many others, the tithe will be a leap of faith. In Ephesians 3:20-21, Paul’s words promise us that our faith in God to enable our giving is well-placed.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

May our love for the Lord be reflected in our giving!

Giving of Our First fruits

The principle of first fruits giving, established by God in the Old Testament, continues to be strongly encouraged, although not expressly commanded, throughout the New Testament. God directed his people to give him the firstborn of their sons, as well as of their cattle and sheep (Exodus 22:29-30). 

The first fruits of the grain, new wine and oil, as well as the first wool from the shearing of their sheep were to be shared with the priests who ministered to them in the Lord’s name (Deuteronomy 18:3-4). God commanded, “Bring the best of the first fruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God “(Exodus 23:19).

The fact that God is the giver of our gifts and deserves our first and best is still true today. When we give of our first fruits, we recognize God as our creator and ourselves as his possessions. God owns us and all that we have. While we honor God with our first and best, we are to consecrate the portion we keep for ourselves to his glory as well. The Apostle Paul reminded the Romans,

“If the part of dough offered as first fruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches” (Romans 11:16).

Giving is our response to God’s love and grace. We give willingly and cheerfully out of thanksgiving to God. We give our first fruits, because we want to honor God with our best, not just with what is left over after we satisfy our own needs and wants. Giving our first fruits is being obedient to God’s word. Proverbs 3:9 commands,

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops.”

First fruits giving of all we have is given to God in recognition that he is the giver and that all we have is to be used in service to him.

May God bless us as a congregation during our Tithing: A Leap of Faith! (Ten percent for ten weeks) program as we honor the Lord with our first fruits giving.

Wrapping Paper
Wrapping gifts in paper or decorative boxes began about 1880. Stores wanted to encourage people to buy manufactured presents instead of giving homemade items. "Encyclopedia of Christmas" says retailers began wrapping customers' purchases in paper decorated with holiday symbols to make the purchased gifts special.

Twelve Days of Christmas 
Some historians say the song "Twelve Days of Christmas" has a religious meaning. Roman Catholics couldn't practice their faith in England from 1558 to 1829, so some historians say "Twelve Days" was created in code as a catechism song.

The song's true love symbolized God. The person receiving the song's gifts was a believer. The partridge in the pear tree represents Christ, who died on a tree. Two turtle doves are the Old and New Testaments; three French hens symbolize faith, hope and charity. Four calling birds are the New Testament's four gospels; five gold rings the Bible's first five books. Six geese lying are Genesis' six days of creation. Seven swans a-swimming are the seven sacraments. Eight maids a-milking represent the eight beatitudes; nine ladies dancing are nine fruits of the Holy Spirit. Ten lords a-leaping symbolize the Ten Commandments; Jesus' 11 faithful disciples are 11 pipers piping. The 12 drummers are 12 points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

Christmas Cards
Ancient Romans and some early Europeans sent greetings to friends and family, but at the start of a new year. The first Christmas cards seem to have been made in England in the 1840s. Printing improvements and inexpensive postal service made the cards so popular that by 1880 the British postal service was urging people to "post early for Christmas." The first cards appeared in America in the 1850s but became popular in the 1870s. That's when lithographer Louis Prang began producing beautiful, ornate cards in the Boston area.

Never Too Old For Sunday School 

Every Sunday morning, the children of the parish join in the 10:00 AM Service through the Children's Sermon. They are then excused with their teachers to their respective classrooms for their lesson based on the Sunday Lectionary used in worship. Show your children your faith in God and bring them to Sunday School. It is important that our children learn about their Christian faith, they will have fun in the process and make new friends. Please be supportive of this children's ministry.

Pray for their safety, pray for their needs, and for there
 understand and love for God

 Tithing: A Leap of Faith! 

The Gifts of Cain and Abel

The first gifts that we read about in Scripture are the offerings made by Cain and Abel who were the sons of Adam and Eve. In Genesis 4:2b-4 we read, “Now Abel kept flocks and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.” Cain and Abel, having been instructed by Adam in the knowledge of the Lord, brought offerings or gifts for the Lord. Because one worked the land and the other raised animals, their gifts were different. We read that Cain “brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering,” whereas Abel “brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock.”

There is also an indication of a difference in the attitudes of the hearts of the two brothers. While Cain wasn’t concerned about giving the first or best of his crop, Abel brought in his best from his first born. God looked with favor upon Abel’s offering. God looked into the hearts of both Cain and Abel as he looks into our hearts. He saw Abel’s humble faith. In his gift, Abel showed his sincere gratitude for all
that God had done for him.

We need to understand that it’s not the size of our gifts and offerings which makes them acceptable to the Lord, but rather it is the attitude of our hearts and minds toward God. God wants our gifts to be an expression of our love for him. He wants us to give cheerfully rather than grudgingly. He wants us to give out of love through faith. We are told by the writer in Hebrews that without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).

May this story of giving by Cain and Abel help us to examine our attitude toward giving. If we are giving our first and best out of faith and love to the Lord, God looks with favor upon our giving. May God grant us all faithful, loving, and giving hearts during our “Tithing: A Leap of Faith!” program and may we, by God’s grace, become committed to a lifetime of generosity.

The Women of St. Peter’s host the Coffee Hour

Our Women of St. Peter's host Coffee Hour after each service on Sundays.  However, they are in need of volunteers to help bake or purchase baked goods  and also clean up afterwards.  Volunteers only need to help once in a while.  Please sign the sheet on our bulletin board in the Narthex.

You may also make a monetary donation to our group and they will purchase items on your behalf also.

Perhaps, you might consider hosting our Coffee Hour yourself for a special occasion such as a birthday, anniversary, etc.  If you would like to do this, please contact our Church office.

This is an appreciated activity
which is enjoyed by all.

Some people have a job in the Church Others invite themselves into a ministry.

What’s the difference, you ask?

It’s a job 
If you’re doing it because no one else will.

It’s a ministry.
If you’re doing it to service the God. 

It’s a job
If you quit because someone criticizes you. 

It’s a ministry  -  If you keep serving.

It’s a job
If you’ll do it as long as it doesn’t interfere.

It’s a job  -  With your other activities. 

It’s a ministry  - 
If you are committed to staying, even if it means letting go of other things. 

It’s a ministry  -  If you quit because no one
thanks or praised you.

It’s a ministry  -  If you sick with it, even though no one recognized your efforts .

It’s a job  - 
It’s hard to get excited about a job.

It’s a ministry  -  It’s is inevitable to become excited about a ministry.

It’s a job
  -  If our concern is success.

It’s a ministry  -  If your concern is faithfulness and service. 

If god calls you to a ministry, don’t treat it like a job!  Remember always the hand of God is outstretched for those who with to clasp it.

Seniorenkreis Bericht November 2011

 Als erstes möchten wir als Seniorengruppe unserer Präsidentin, Käthe, schnelle Genesung wünschen, damit sie bald wieder in unserer Mitte wirken kann.

Das Senioren –Treffen am 02. November 2011 war hauptsächlich der Modeschau gewidmet. Sieben Damen aus der Seniorengruppe haben die Kleidung der Firma CATO als Modelle vorgeführt. Die Kleidung für den Herbst und Winter war attraktiv und erstaunlich preiswert. Der Modetrend scheint die Fell-Muster der wilden Tierwelt dieses Jahr zu imitieren!

Unser Pastor Gies war mit Frau Kathi ebenfalls zugegen. Auch wurde an die Geburtstagskinder für den Monat November gedacht. Jeder durfte sich ein Lied wünschen, das von allen Anwesenden gesungen wurde.

Am Mittwoch, dem 16. November feierten wir Thanksgiving mit einem sehr netten Programm. Als erstes begrüssten wir unsere Präsidentin Kaethe mit einem riesigen Blumenstrauss, freuten uns alle über ihr Erscheinen. Pastor Gross kam zu Besuch und hat uns während des Programms an der Hammond Orgel unterhalten und alle Anwesenden konnten mitsingen. Unser Pastor Gies hat auch viel zum Gelingen des Treffens beigetragen. Beiden Pastoren danken wir dafür. Wie immer, hat uns Else Pfaehler beim Singen am Klavier begleitet und viel Freude bereitet. Zum Schluss hatten wir ein schmackhaftes Truth-Hahn-Essen, das von Erika Anger, Erika Krueger und Irma Pope zubereitet wurde. Nicht zu vergessen die fleissigen Hände, die später abgeräumt und abgewaschen haben.

Das traditionelle Weihnachtsfest des Seniorenkreises wird am 07. Dezember gefeiert. Wie jedes Jahr werden am Tag zuvor die Tische festlich geschmückt und unsere Küchenfeen bereiten das leckere Essen vor, das mit viel Liebe am Mittwoch gekocht wird. Ein weihnachtliches Programm ist in Vorbereitung und sehr wahrscheinlich wird auch der Weihnachtsmann wieder vorbeikommen. Jedermann ist herzlich eingeladen. Anmeldungen hierfür bitte bis zum 01. Dezember. Der Kostenbeitrag ist $13.00.

Wir wünschen allen Mitgliedern und Freunden einen wunderschönen Advent, ein besinnliches Weihnachtsfest, Gottes Schutz und Segen und einen guten Rutsch in’s Neue Jahr.

Das erste Treffen wird am 11. Januar 2012 sein – wie immer um 11:00 Uhr. Wir hoffen auf ein frohes Wiedersehen im Neuen Jahr.

Wir werden Weihnachtslieder singen, Gedichte vortragen und bei Kaffee, Kuchen und Plätzchen plaudern. Der Eintritt ist frei.

The Seniors (Seniorenkreis) will meet again on every other Wednesdays during each Month at 11AM. The group meets the first and third Wednesday of every month for a short meeting followed by festivities and a luncheon. Stop by for a visit and consider joining, everyone is welcome !
