Reformation Day
Origins of Protestant Faith in the Story of Martin Luther

monk in robesProtestants, particularly Lutherans, Reformation Day is one of the most important holidays, next to Christmas and Easter. Reformation Day is celebrated on the last in Sunday in October and honors the beginning of the Reformation, commemorating Martin Luther's posting of ninety-five theses at the entrance to the Castle Church in the town of Wittenberg, England, in AD 1517.

Luther, an Augustinian monk, doctor of theology, and resident of Wittenberg, is considered by Protestants to have rediscovered the fundamental tenants of Christian faith, thereby setting the stage for a confrontation with in the Church that would eventually lead to the Reformation.

Luther and the Trees
Luther Oaks, Linden, Beeches, and an Apple tree
© ®

   Copyright 2001-2007 KDG Wittenberg

Trees have always, in all religions, been mythological symbols; they become transfigured, just think of the Tree of Knowledge. In our times, there are many legends about trees or their fruit, like the apple tree under which Newton sat.

For this reason, there are many 'tree legends' in association with Luther, who enjoyed spending his free time in the garden among trees and flowers.
Everywhere you go, there are Luther oaks, linden or beech trees which are more or less tied to documented legends.

Many legends are told about the Luther Oak in Wittenberg, one of the most well known tree-legends.
The spot in Wittenberg where the current Luther oak stands is where Luther

burned the Papal Bull
of Excommunication
and books by his
opponents on
 December 10, 1520.

The legend goes like this: A Wittenberg student, an enthusiastic follower of Luther, was in love with a girl whose grandmother was equally enthusiastic about the old church.

On the day of the burning, the woman supposedly wandered to that spot with her granddaughter out of curiosity

There they ran into students who were excitedly talking about what Luther had done. The grandmother was overcome by anger and rammed her walking stick into the ground; while doing this, she swore that the student would not be allowed to marry her granddaughter until the stick had turned green.

This student planted a young oak on that very spot. The following spring, the student reported this 'miracle' to the grandmother...

The original Luther oak in Wittenberg - when and by whomever it was planted - was chopped down during the Nepoleonic Wars because there was a shortage of fuel.

The current Luther oak was planted  in 1830; in 1904 an unknown person tried to cut it down.
Today the tree suffers from air pollution and also the results of this 'attack'.

Luther and the Apple Tree

Many more legends about Luther and trees swirl around, one of the best known should be mentioned, the famous saying: "If I knew that tomorrow was the end of the world, I would plant an apple tree today!" is attributed to Luther.  One must remember, that the first written evidence of this saying comes from 1944...

Special Fall Stories

    Free in Spirit

Every day we are bombarded with messages from politicians and advertisers about freedom. Politicians promise us that if we support military interventions in other countries, we will create freedom for people around the world. Pharmaceutical companies promise us that their drugs will make us free from pain and illness.

Jesus had something else in mind when he spoke about freedom. He taught his disciples that freedom is not something that can be won by exercising military strength or swallowing a pill. Instead, Jesus promised that the truth of God's word would make people free. Jesus wanted them to realize that embracing God's unconditional love would grant them a freedom that the world could never provide. Unlike the freedom promised to people by politicians or corporations, the freedom Jesus promised to the disciples was based upon knowing the truth about God's gracious love.

As we celebrate the Reformation, we recall Martin Luther's lifeand the freedom of spirit that he found in the gospel of grace. He encountered freedom by studying God's word and realizing the truth about God's saving love. It was this freedom that gave him the courage to speak out against a religious system that had its grip on the lives of millions of people across Europe.

Luther spoke freely about the need to reform the church so that people could read the Bible in their own language and receive both the bread and wine during the sacramental meal.

It is by the grace of God that we, too, can live in freedom. We are free even in the midst of pain, bondage, fear, and danger. In the truth of God's word, we find the freedom to move beyond our limitations and fully become who God is calling us to be in this world.

SENIORENKREIS
®

In Liebe

BRIEF TRANSLATION
Translation by: Astrid Campbell

We thank the Lord Father for the beautiful Summer months. He supports us and gives us strength to enjoy everything with love.

Fall nudge's near, the leaves are turning and falling from the trees. Our first meetings were on Sept 9th and 23rd at 11:00 AM as usual. 42 Seniors attended. Even though our group is small, we hold together and enjoy ourselves while we wait for new members from St. Peter‘s. Then we will be able to support the congregation again. Most of us are seniors and we would be happy to greet new members.

For the Fall months we have planned: Oct. 7th a presentation about home caregivers; on Nov. 4th a Fashion Show with Fall/Winter clothes. Everyone is invited. Please respond with Käthe F., Adele R., or the Church Secretary.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who are ill, especially Else & Paul P. The dear Lord gives you strength when it is needed most. Heavenly Father we give you praise and thanks for our small senior group, which works together very well. We thank and praise your Holy name.

With love,
Käthe F.

“SIMPLY GIVING”
Electronic Transfers

“Simply Giving” is an automated giving program designed to help you conveniently and consistently contribute to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. Through “Simply Giving”, your offerings are made through a preauthorized withdrawal from your bank account. You determine the frequency of your automatic gift—weekly, semi-monthly or monthly—the option is yours. Your offering is deposited into the church’s bank account on the same day it is withdrawn from your account—at NO cost to you or the church.

Benefits to you and to your
Congregation

“Simply Giving” is a reliable, safe way to move your stewardship plan into action. It allows you to share your offerings through planned giving and activates your generosity into ongoing stewardship. Because your offering is given consistently, you won’t need to play “catch-up” at yearend or worry about forgotten checkbooks or missed Sunday offerings.

But you’re not the only one that benefits. Your congregation benefits from steady, more predictable revenues throughout the year, more efficient bookkeeping and greater confidence in meeting its financial commitments.

Why does Thrivent Financial for Lutheran offer Simply Giving?

Thrivent Financial offers Simply Giving to further its mission of serving Lutheran congregations and institutions.
